We’ve reached a stage where there is literally an app for almost everything, but what about helpful tools for a more sustainable lifestyle? Here are some of our favourite apps and web tools to keep you inspired.

Slow Fashion
Fast fashion is a significant burden on the planet with many of the largest manufacturers still actively avoiding environmental (and ethical) responsibilities. So how do you know which brands are good? Good On You offers ethical brand rating directory that lists and ranks thousands of the best known fashion companies to help you make more informed decisions.

Mindful Meals
Diet is integral to reducing your personal carbon footprint and the impact depends largely on what you eat and where it comes from. For vegans, vegetarians and conscious eaters alike, HappyCow is the ultimate tool for finding local cafes and restaurants that offer more sustainable meals.

Waste Less
Australia sends 7.3 million tonnes of food waste to landfill every year! Bring Me Home  and Ywaste are apps designed to reduce food waste by matching food businesses with surplus meals and hungry customers and people facing hardship. Olio works in a similar way allowing food & other household items to their neighbours.

Donate Smarter
Goods donated to charity usually spend time in storage or worse, end up in landfill! GIVIT acts like a virtual matchmaker for charities and those looking to donate unwanted items. An ingenious way to save space, time, and transport energy/emissions.

Recycle Right
Have you ever had a piece of packaging your weren’t sure how to properly dispose of? Recycle Mate (app/website) is like Shazam for waste, upload a photo or type the name of your item to receive disposal guidance specific. It’s currently only running in NSW but keep an eye out for similar programs in your state.

Edu-tainment
Looking for something education, yet entertaining? NASA have two great climate apps available. Offset, is a very retro challenge to slow the pace of global warming while the Earth Now app displays real-time global satellite data of your planet’s vital signs. Our very own Planet Watch transforms your school into a planet and it’s up to you to keep it safe using real data and interactive graphs.

Search Greener
An oldie but a goodie, Ecosia has been offering sustainable web searches for over 10 years now. Self-described as the ‘search engine that plants trees’, this search tool now goes a step further using 100% renewable energy to power servers.

If you know any other awesomely inspiring apps, we’d love to hear from you! Please send recommendations or feedback to info@solarschools.net.
