Nissan, the world’s best-selling electric car maker (surprisingly not Tesla!) has launched an initiative to get solar into homes. Currently only available in the UK, the automaker is offering customers roof-mounted panels and battery storage. The UK isn’t known for an abundance of sunshine but its northerly aspect allows for 16 hours of panel exposure during summer days. Recent developments in home battery technology will now allow this energy to be stored for the gloomier months.

Interestingly, customers have the option between new battery packs or “second-life” packs using retired Nissan vehicle packs. As Tesla rolls out similar home focused products in Australia, Europe and the US it’s likely we’ll see more automakers shift toward home solar products utilising advances in car technology and existing supply chains.
